Steve
Roy has a wide range of drumming experience. Beginning with kit, Steve
performed and recorded with "The Pluses" and "Skin Grove".
One of his earliest influences was playing Pipe Band
Snare, based in the tradition of Scottish drumming. Steve has been playing
in this style for over 20 years. Steve has instructed the drum corps
for the Keith Highlanders, the Northwest Junior Pipe Band and several
others in the greater Seattle area. With his creative an innovative
method of writing music, as director of the NWJPB has taken first place
in the Northwest region and in 2008 placed 5th in the world at the World
Pipe Band Championship in Glasgow Scotland.
Steve has also spent much time focused on writing books
of musical scores and practical guides for Pipe Band students of all
ages. He has recently published four books and an instructional DVD
that are available nationwide.
Above all, Steve has had the opportunity to refine
his own playing by studying with Master Drummer John Scullion, who has
won the World Solo Championships four times in Glasgow Scotland. Learning
from one of the best drummers in the world has given him an edge on
his playing and teaching.
In addition to Kit and Scottish Snare, Steve is a
remarkable cajon player, and performs with the flamenco community in
Seattle. Steve recorded a Latin album "Amanecer" with the
group "Luna Nueva". He has been refining his skills with cajon
instructors from Spain.
Steve is also skilled in a large variety of hand percussions.
Bongos, Timbale, Djembe, are all part of his repertoire. Steve currently
performs with the Latin band "Rumba Kings" and Jazz group
"Steve Roy Jazz Trio" and uses a large variety of hand percussion
instruments with his live performances.
Steve loves to teach all forms of drumming and has
been doing so for over 20 years. His innovative style of teaching and
strong background in so many different genres of music keep students
from all backgrounds successful in any musical style they choose.
