Joe La Barbera Drum Clinic
@ Seattle Drum School L.A.B.
Thursday June 10th at 7:30 PM
FREE to the Public
Let’s Play Stella Records and Seattle Drum School present jazz great Joe La Barbera in a drum clinic Thursday June 10th at 7:30 pm. The clinic is free to the public and reservations are recommended as seating is limited. The L.A.B. at Seattle Drum School is located at 12510 15th Ave NE in Seattle. Reservations may be made to 206.364.8815 or to info@seattledrumschool.com. Attendees will receive discounted tickets to the Modern Romance CD Release show at Jazz Alley June 14th.
Joe La Barbera was born in Mt. Morris, New York to a musical family. He has enjoyed a long and varied career in music that has taken him all over the world with some of the finest names in jazz. In 1978 he joined Bill Evans in what was to become a landmark trio. Evans said of him “Joe is very dedicated to playing quality music and he’s a top soloist and he does the right thing at the right time”. Doug Ramsey’s Rifftides says “Joe La Barbera is one of the contemporary masters of melodic drumming.” Joe currently resides in Los Angeles and performs with his own quintet and as sidemen for Eddie Daniels, Alan Broadbent, Bill Mays, Randy Brecker, Kenny Wheeler and brother Pat La Barbera. He is on the faculty at California Institute for the Arts and is a busy clinician and guest artist at many major universities here and abroad. Joe has appeared on over 150 recordings.
Joe will be joining pianist Dave Peck and bassist Jeff Johnson as they return to Seattle’s Jazz Alley June 14th to debut their newest recording Modern Romance. Recorded live at Jazz Alley in the fall of 2007 this set of standard songs from the Great American Songbook continues the trio’s exploration into the reinvention of the jazz piano trio. Both rhythmic and romantic, the trio uses the standard repertoire as a framework for new composition and form. Their work is rich, intuitive, and harmonically complex with a unique and signature sound. Modern Romance is surprising and beautiful and comes to the listener in a swinging and easy way. The songs are love songs, old love songs but the interpretation is distinctly contemporary.
