Geoff Harper Presents: Last Mondays...11/26/2007
Geoff Harper Presents: Last Mondays... Monday, November 26th at 7:30pm. $15. Last Mondays, a monthly concert series presented by Geoff “Slim” Harper at the Seattle Drum School, is very proud to present a special evening with the Teddy Monk Power Trio featuring legendary rock drummer Matt Cameron and Seattle’s own Ryan Burns on keyboards and Geoff Harper on the upright bass. Set time is 7:30 p.m. and doors will open at 7:00 p.m. Who would imagine that a legendary rock drummer’s personal projects would lead to this? When one hears the name Matt Cameron, one’s thoughts immediately incline toward rock groups such as Soundgarden (which he co-founded and was a member of from 1986-1997) or Pearl Jam (for whom he has been the drummer since 1998). However, Cameron is truly a multi-talented artist, currently exploring different tongues in the musical world. While still recoding one of Cameron’s personal projects in the studio, this trio, with Ryan Burns and Geoff Harper, found a creative balance and has decided to come out and play their interesting takes on Monk’ s classics plus some original compositions for all to enjoy. Berklee survivor Ryan Burns is a luminary in the Seattle music scene, being known for his subtle wit, be it verbally or on the keyboards. He has brought his special touch to different projects, working with artists as diversified the Matt Jorgenson 451+ (Earshot Jazz Magazine's "Best Acoustic Group" of 2003), the Tom Marriott Willie Nelson Project, Bebop and Destruction (2004 Seattle Weekly "Best Jazz/Avant-Garde Band") to the Tacoma Symphony, in passing by the Food Network on Cable TV. Burns is on the faculty at the two northwest universities PLU and UPS, and the Seattle Drum School. Burns is also a nationally published writer, his articles being featured in All About Jazz.com and All About Jazz-Seattle. One of the Pacific Northwest’s most solid upright bassists, Geoff Harper adds his quirky humor to the local jazz universe. He is fresh from recording with Julian Priester in Rudy Van Gelder’s studio where he was transfixed touching basses that had passed by such illustrious hands as Mingus and Ray Brown. Harper has performed with a horde of excellent musicians, including Herbie Hancock, Bill Frisell, Stone Gossard, Jessica Williams, Ingrid Jensen, Kenny Kirkland, Jeff Hamilton, Phil Woods, Jay Clayton, Dawn Clement, Wayne Horvitz, Hans Teuber, Eyvind Kang and Tim Young. He studied bass at both The Berklee College of Music and Cornish College of the Arts. Harper has recorded extensively, including recordings with Bebop and Destruction, The Marriot Jazz Quintet, The Real Harper Bros. and his own personal formations such as Brandin Offischner. He currently teaches at the Seattle Drum School and performs all over the region.
