Here’s a sample page from an upcoming book by Steve Smith, one that I was introduced to years ago and still use, incorporating various stickings or rudiments around the kit. The basic exercise as written isn’t difficult, but being able to vocalize the counting as well as singing individual hymns is the real challenge. It’s an excellent way to calibrate your time and feel with a backbeat at the core, making it both familiar and immediately musical. This page has been my default student intake form to gauge one’s natural independence and focus threshold.”
