Q: How has a student inspired you?
A: “When students see the results of their hard work. It’s a nice reminder that putting in the effort really does pay off.”

Q: My Essential tools for teaching are:
A: “Duet books, bluetooth speaker, and a sense of humor.”

ABOUT LAUREN: Lauren was born and raised in the great Northwest and has taught clarinet, saxophone, and flute in the Seattle area for several years. A grad from the University of Washington, she received a Master’s in Music Education, and studied education and conducting with Dr.Steven Morrison and Tim Salzman, and jazz saxophone with Greg Sinibaldi. She received her Bachelor’s degree in Music Education from Central Washington University where she studied with Larry Gookin, Mark Lane, and Joseph Brooks. Before going to UW, Lauren was hired by Seattle Public Schools and taught band and orchestra at Broadview-Thomson K-8 and then orchestra and choir at Whitman Middle School. Lauren maintains a busy schedule performing in semi-pro and professional bands around the area playing saxophone and clarinet.

“I teach clarinet, saxophone, and flute with an emphasis on classical music, jazz and improvisation. I will teach students from age 9 through adults, beginners to advanced players. Private lessons are custom tailored to the interests and needs of the individual student. I approach teaching with an emphasis on fostering a student’s awareness in their playing so they can become independent and thoughtful musicians.”

ABOUT LARRY
Larry Mahlis is a drummer/percussionist with over 20 years professional experience and is known as an original and versatile voice on drum set and percussion. He has performed numerous times in clubs and concerts and has appeared on a number of recordings in addition to film and TV soundtrack work. Larry has performed in the US, Japan, Mexico and Canada.

Since 1997 Larry has been an instructor at the Seattle Drum School. While at the Drum School Larry has taught beginning to advanced orchestral and rudimental snare, drum set in all styles; jazz, rock, funk, Brazilian and Afro-Cuban, Middle Eastern and even applications of North Indian Tabla to drum set. Larry also teaches North Indian Tabla, Middle Eastern Frame drums, Darabukka and beginning Conga, Djembe, Timpani and Mallets.

Larry’s students have played in Roosevelt High’s jazz ensembles, are currently attending the Berklee College of Music, jazz ensemble at Berkley (bay area) and are involved in local solo and ensemble festivals as well as playing in local bands at venues around the city.

Larry’s passion for drumming and warmth spills over into his abilities as a teacher. Larry constantly strives to connect with each student by creating a fun and nurturing environment. It is in this fun and nurturing environment where the student’s potential is revealed and polished.

with OPEN MIC and MO’JAMS!

12/8/24 Featuring ARI PECK TRIO: Theo McGaughey on Bass, Ari Peck on Keyboard and Ethan Faunce on Drums.

This trio is a newly formed group of high school musicians from West Seattle. Their bassist is connected to #seattledrumschool of Music, as a jazz band camp graduate. They are excited to feature and hope to see you come out to Mo’Jam with them after their set!

Each month come out for:
1. A Featured act (at least one member must be under 21) *
2. OPEN MIC – message us what backline you’ll need so we’re ready for you!
3. MO’JAMS – all improv music making. Join bands of strangers to make up a Mo’Jam song on the spot! An 11 year #musiccommunity by @mojampresents .

ABOUT ACE KARIMI:
Ehssan Karimi is an American drummer who started playing at the age of eight in Seattle, WA. He received a full-tuition scholarship to Berklee College of Music in 2007 and graduated with a BA in drum set performance in 2011.

Along with his drumming, Ehssan also has over a decade of experience performing and recording with The Hang - a steel hand pan instrument created in Switzerland.

The Seattle bred drummer has established himself as one of the most sought-after players in the Pacific Northwest and beyond. Along with his versatile discography, he’s toured nationally and internationally with Delvon Lamarr Organ Trio, Low Cut Connie, The Playing For Change Band, Thao and The Get Down Stay Down, Ayron Jones, Lotus Crush, The Scene Aesthetic, Mctuff, The Senate and many more. Ehssan has shared stages with acclaimed acts such as Run DMC, Guns and Roses, The Lumineers, Public Enemy, The Head and The Heart, Theory of a Dead Man, Pete Rock, Cory Henry etc. Lately you can catch him touring the world with @planetsdigable !

We still can’t get over how fantastic last week’s Second Sundays at Three, youth music showcase was!

@suffix_band was the featured artist, but their drummer got sick the day before. We put out the bat-call, and drum student Fatima stepped up to play a full set with less than 24 hours of preparation!
This was a true experience of building a youth music community. Thank you Elliott & Eva for your commitment.

Woodstick was created by Chris Kimball back in 2003 with the help of Donn Bennett @donns_drum_vault . This event has brought some of the greatest drummers and raised thousands of dollars for many causes over the years. This next event will be helping save PARKLAND SCHOOL. This will also be the home of Woodstick annually. New to Woodstick is selling floor space next to featured and alumni drummers and also general spaces. We will have several clinics, zoom in to three other countries and play along with a live band. There will be raffles for various cool drum items such as a Mapex Snare as Mapex is the main sponsor. Get your tickets now as spaces are limited.

Woodstick will be helping save an Historical School. Developers were going to scrape it off and build apartments. Julie Collison of Collison Reality saved the landmark, but it needs so much love.
