Means for Dreams Foundation: Keeping Music Education Accessible

Committed to making music education accessible, Seattle Drum School of Music owners Steve and Kristy Smith have historically and unofficially provided tuition assistance to students with lesser means.
At Seattle Drum School of Music, we’ve always believed that high-quality music education should be accessible to everyone, regardless of their financial situation.

To help make that belief a reality, Steve and Kristy founded Means for Dreams Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to providing tuition assistance and scholarships for students who might not otherwise be able to afford lessons.

This creates a way for the community to contribute tax-deductible donations to support students who require financial aid, ensuring that economic barriers do not hinder musical aspirations. Support through grants and donations is crucial for sustaining and expanding these programs. Your contribution will help us continue to provide these valuable services to the community, fostering a love for music and supporting the next generation of musicians.

What Means for Dreams Foundation Does

  • Since 2021, Means for Dreams Foundation has provided over 20 students each year with tuition assistance.

  • As of the close of 2024, the foundation has raised and donated $30,000 and donated to fund music education.

  • In 2025, the goal is to continue expanding this vital program to include even more students.
  • Why This Matters

For many students, music lessons are about far more than just learning an instrument.

As one scholarship recipient put it:

“Taking music lessons genuinely improves my life in a way that nothing else can. Music gives me time each week to decompress, focus, and express feelings that words can’t capture. It sparks my curiosity and creativity.”

    — Ethan

For families like Zoe’s, music lessons were even more:

“Raising a blind, autistic daughter with complex medical needs meant that many programs simply couldn’t accommodate her. But music education became her lifeline—offering not only creative expression but also a sense of connection and leadership as her skills grew. Means for Dreams, in partnership with Seattle Drum School, made this possible, even during times of financial hardship.”

    How You Can Help

If you want to directly support tuition assistance for students at Seattle Drum School of Music, the best way to do that is to donate through Means for Dreams Foundation at meansfordreamsfoundation.org. Your contributions are tax-deductible.

This is separate from our general donation portal, which supports Seattle Drum School of Music’s overall programs through our fiscal sponsorship with Allied Arts Foundation.

Both are deeply appreciated—but if you want your donation to help a student afford lessons directly, Means for Dreams is the most direct platform.

    Volunteer

If you’d like to support this work in other ways—through volunteering or community outreach—please reach out to Carrie, President of Means for Dreams Foundation, at president@meansfordreamsfoundation.org.

    Thank You

Thanks to the generosity of our community, music education has remained within reach for students who need it most.

Together, we can keep that going—because every voice deserves to be heard, and every student deserves the chance to discover their musical potential.
