Come soak in spooky season with us with this scary movie, Dark Waters (this link contains spoilers)! Produced by and starring Mark Ruffalo (with co-star Anne Hathaway lol), this legal thriller is based on a true story and “dramatizes Robert Bilott’s case against the chemical manufacturing corporation DuPont” who are accused of releasing dangerous chemicals into a West Virginia community and using them in their products. This ties into some potential harms in our cookware, which we will explore in the second half of the program and learn about safer cookware options.
This is a scary movie. It isn’t jump scary, but it is existentially scary in that ‘oh no, why do we live in this poisoned world’ kind of way ~ we will do our best to support folks in self and co-regulating, but we encourage folks to make plans to take care of themselves in the ways they know best.
Content Warnings: Mild Sex & Nudity, Mild Gore (killing/danger to animals), Mild Profanity, Mildly frightening & Intense Scenes, Severe Illness (disabling events, cancer, death), nearly every one in this movie is white.
We cannot stream the movie to virtual attendees, but we will share a link so virtual attendees can co-watch the movie with others or watch on their own up to 72 hours before the event and join at 3:45pm!
The first 30 in person attendees will receive a free cast iron pan to support you in having safer cookware! We don’t have the funds to mail cast irons to folks, but if fewer than 30 folks come in person we will have some available for online attendees to pick up. Please RSVP by 10/10.
Name tags will be available for names/pronouns.
Food will be provided (dietary restrictions requested for in person attendees, gift cards offered for virtual attendees).
Zoom will be recorded and we will take photos during the workshops and at the end. Attendees can add a star to indicate if they do not want photos/videos of them taken.
Automated captioning will be provided.
Free Unrestricted Parking is available in the lot, both to the east of the building (between it and the Maruta Shoten market), and to the west of the building (by I-5 entrance). There should be ample spots available. Carpool coordination available upon request.
Public Transportation: The 60 and 124 busses stop right across the street from Seattle Drum School, near 107 (4 min/.2 mi), 131/132 (12 min/.5 mi). It is about a 20 minute bus ride from the Beacon Hill (via 60/107), Rainier Beach (via 107), and Tukwila (via 124) light rail stations.
Physical Space Access for Seattle Drum School
Physical Space: Here are some photos of the space. The building meets ADA standards, but there is a tight spot in the hallway that has a lip – if you think this might be an issue for you, please let us know and we can connect about access support. The ramp entrance is in the back/north part of the building, further from the street. There will be a small band elsewhere in the building 2-3pm, and maybe a couple of other folks in music lessons.
Bathrooms: There are multi-stall restrooms available that will be all-gender for our event. One of them has a urinal.
Lower-Sensory Space is available up 18 steps throughout the event. There will be some lobby space available (no steps required) after the bands leave at 3pm, and if steps aren’t accessible for folks we can make space in a room behind the movie space. Please let us know if this would be supportive for you in access needs.
Seating includes movie chairs and couches (priority for fat folks and others who need them for access reasons), and stacking chairs (weight limit of 300lbs) with arms. If folks want to create comfortable spaces for themselves on the floor, they are welcome to bring blankets, pillows, or other supports, too!
Fragrance: Please limit your use of fragrances as much as possible (some help on how to do that here) – use fragrance free detergent on your clothes, and don’t wear perfumes / heavily scented products. The space is not low fragrance, but we are doing our best.
Access requests, including interpretation and captioners, can be made during registration or by emailing Karissa Masciel at karissa@alphabetalliance.org. Requests for interpreters and captioners that are made less than 48 hours before the event typically are more difficult to meet. We will try and notify you if we cannot secure requested access.
